My nephew and I drove the Henness Pass Road from Verdi, Nevada to Camptonville, California on Friday/Saturday of October 24/25, 2008. I met up with him in Stateline, Nevada after riding the Amtrak bus from Sacramento's Amtrak station to Stateline.
OK, I get it; it's not a train, but it's the only public transportation up to South Lake Tahoe from Sacramento. The silly thing is that you can't buy a ticket to ride from Sacramento. I had to purchase a ticket leaving from Davis, about 15 miles west. The first leg of the trip is via a train, and then you transfer to a waiting bus for the other 90% of the trip. Fortunately, they'll allow you to miss the first leg and just board in Sacramento. There's $8 I'll never see again. ; )
